Übersicht
Silvester 1999, Mitternacht: Der New Yorker Pizzabote Philip J. Fry wird - scheinbar versehentlich - in einen kryostatischen Tiefschlaf versetzt, aus dem er eintausend Jahre später an Silvester 2999 wieder erwacht. Bei Planet Express, einem interplanetaren Lieferdienst, der von seinem entfernten Nachfahren Professor Farnsworth geleitet wird, nimmt er eine Anstellung an. In seinen Mitarbeitern findet er Freunde. Zusammen erleben sie skurrile Abenteuer, die etwa durch Lieferaufträge zu entfernten Planeten oder Erfindungen des Professors ausgelöst werden.

Fox hielt sich dabei an die Reihenfolge der Produktion, strahlte allerdings nur neun Folgen als zusammenhängende Sendestaffel aus und verlegte die restlichen vier in die zweite Sendestaffel. Die zweite Produktionsstaffel von Futurama besteht aus 19 Episoden, die erstmals ab dem 4. Dezember 2000 beim US-amerikanischen Sender Fox zu sehen waren. Fox hielt sich dabei im Wesentlichen an die Reihenfolge der Produktion, strahlte die Folgen aber nicht als zusammenhängende Sendestaffel aus, sondern verschob die letzten vier Episoden in die dritte Sendestaffel. Mit einem Emmy für "Hochzeitstag auf Cyclopia" und einem Annie Award für "Das merkwürdige Verhalten geschlechtsreifer Krustentiere zur Paarungszeit" wurden erstmals die Arbeiten an einzelnen Episoden der Serie mit bedeutenden Auszeichnungen honoriert. Die erstgenannte Episode war außerdem für eben jenen Annie nominiert, den die andere gewann. Daneben wurde die Episode "Kennen Sie Popplers?" mit einem Environmental Media Award geehrt.
